Also called: CSM
A customer success manager is the person responsible for a book of existing accounts after the sale closes, driving adoption, renewal, and expansion rather than net-new acquisition.
A customer success manager owns the relationship with an account after the sale closes: driving product adoption, catching renewal risk early, and finding the next expansion opportunity, rather than chasing net-new logos. That's a different job than an account manager, who typically owns the commercial side of a renewal or a contract negotiation, and a different job again from support, which reacts to tickets rather than watching an account's health proactively.
A CSM's job depends on watching health signals before they turn into a churn conversation: login frequency, feature adoption, ticket volume, and whether the champion who bought the product is still the one using it. Those signals are leading indicators. A renewal conversation that starts the month the contract is up is starting too late if the account has been quietly disengaging for two quarters already.
In an engineered GTM motion, the same signal infrastructure that outbound teams use to spot buying triggers gets pointed inward, at existing accounts: a champion changing roles inside the company, a usage drop crossing a threshold, a support pattern that signals frustration rather than a one-off bug. A CSM working off those signals is running a different job than one working off a quarterly check-in calendar.
Catching NRR erosion early is the real measure of the job: a champion going quiet, usage dropping below a threshold, or a key admin leaving the company are all signals worth acting on well before a renewal date forces the conversation.
CSM gets treated as a support role that also sends renewal reminders. The stronger version of the job is proactive, watching account health continuously and triggering action before a renewal is at risk, not reacting once a customer has already decided to leave.
