Annual contract value

Annual contract value (ACV) is the average yearly value of a single customer contract, used to compare deal size across customers or segments independent of how many years a given contract runs.

ACV normalizes a single contract to its yearly value, the same way ARR normalizes a whole book of business. A multi-year contract gets divided down to what it's worth per year rather than counted at its full term value. It's a per-deal metric, where ARR is a company-wide one, and the two get used together: ARR is roughly the sum of ACV across the active customer base, adjusted for when in the year each contract started.

Why ACV shapes the sales motion, not just the deal size

Average ACV is one of the clearest signals of what a company's go-to-market motion should actually look like. Low-ACV deals usually run a self-serve or inside-sales motion with a short sales cycle and light onboarding, since the deal size can't absorb an expensive selling process. High-ACV deals justify a field sales motion with multi-stakeholder buying committees and a longer cycle, because the revenue per deal covers the cost of selling that way.

ACV and total contract value get used interchangeably, but they answer different questions. TCV is what a contract is worth over its full term. ACV is what it's worth per year. Comparing one company's ACV to another company's TCV makes deal sizes look mismatched when they aren't actually different.

In practice

Segment ACV by cohort, new business versus expansion, by tier, by source, rather than reporting one blended figure. A rising blended ACV can just mean a shift toward fewer, bigger deals rather than real growth in deal value across the base.

What people get wrong

ACV and TCV get treated as the same number. They aren't, and mixing them up when comparing companies or benchmarking deal size produces a comparison that looks meaningful but is actually comparing a per-year figure to a full-contract figure.
