Also called: internal coach · deal coach
A coach is a contact inside the buyer's organization who shares information and makes introductions, but lacks the power, influence, or personal stake that lets a champion drive the deal on your behalf.
A coach and a champion can sound identical on a call. Both answer your questions. Both seem to want you to win. The difference shows up later, in the room you're not invited to.
Force Management draws the line on urgency: a coach has less urgency about your deal because a coach isn't the one selling it internally. A champion is. MEDDICC draws it on traits, power, influence, and a vested interest, all three, and a coach is missing at least one of them, usually the power. So a coach tells you things. A champion acts on them, in meetings where your name never comes up.
Don't write a coach off. They give you access, timing, and the names of people who actually decide. A well-placed coach can walk you to the economic buyer faster than any org chart guess would. And a coach who already has power and influence inside the account, just not yet a personal reason to care, is the closest thing to a champion in waiting. Give that person a reason the deal matters to them specifically, and the relationship can convert.

Reps often promote a coach to champion in their own head the moment the coach says something nice about the deal. Then the champion goes quiet at the exact moment a real champion would be arguing your case internally, and the deal stalls with no obvious cause. Check for the vested interest, not the warmth.
People treat coach and champion as a spectrum, as if enough coaching turns into a champion automatically. It doesn't. A coach without power stays a coach no matter how many calls you have. The conversion only happens when someone who already has power picks up a personal reason to want your deal to close.
