Economic Buyer vs Decision Maker

Also called: economic buyer vs decision-maker · decision maker vs economic buyer

Every economic buyer is a decision maker, but most decision makers on a deal are not the economic buyer. The distinction is veto power over budget, not seniority or influence over the conversation.

Decision maker gets used as a catch-all in sales conversations, which is exactly the problem. Everyone with an opinion becomes a decision maker. Almost nobody actually decides.

MEDDICC's economic buyer definition is narrower and more useful: the person with the power to say yes when others say no, and no when others say yes, holding profit-and-loss responsibility and access to funds that were never part of anyone's budget conversation. A decision maker, in the looser sense most teams use, is anyone with real input into the outcome, a department head, a technical evaluator, a procurement lead. Several decision makers can sit on one deal. Usually only one economic buyer does.

Why the mix-up costs deals

Sell to a decision maker as if they were the economic buyer and you'll get enthusiastic agreement that goes nowhere, because the person you convinced still needs someone else's sign-off. Sell only to committee-level decision makers and skip the economic buyer entirely, and you'll lose to budget objections that never should have reached the final stage. The economic buyer won't announce themselves, MEDDICC is blunt about that, so the job is finding them, not waiting for the title to show up on an org chart.

In practice

A quick filter: ask who can kill this deal even after every other stakeholder has said yes. If your contact can name that person and it isn't themselves, you've found the difference between a decision maker and the economic buyer in one question.

What people get wrong

Reps assume seniority equals economic-buyer status. A VP of Engineering can be a critical decision maker on a technical evaluation and still have zero budget authority, which means closing them is necessary and nowhere close to sufficient.
