A funding signal is a trigger built from a company raising capital, which only turns into a real buying window once a GTM hire lands to spend the new money, not on the day the round closes.
A funding round is a decision a company's board makes about capital, and it isn't a single event a team either catches or misses. It's the start of a lifecycle, and different stretches of that lifecycle call for different outreach, not one templated saw-you-raised message sent the day the round closes.
Right after a round closes, the company is usually in a pre-hire scramble: the money is real but the org chart hasn't caught up, so there's often no one with the authority or the time to evaluate a new tool yet. Once a GTM hire lands, someone is now explicitly tasked with building or rebuilding the go-to-market motion with the new capital, and that's the stretch where a funding signal turns into an actual buying window, because a person with mandate and budget finally exists. Once the stack gets built and locked in, pitching into it is fighting inertia, not chasing an opportunity, unless the incumbent is visibly failing.
Not every funding headline means the same thing either. A bridge round or an extension usually signals a company buying runway, not spending on growth. A real new round, priced by a new lead investor, is different and usually comes with pressure to show growth fast. Skip that check and a funding-signal message lands on a company that just extended its existing round to survive longer, not one opening its budget.
Reference the company's published use-of-funds thesis before a GTM hire exists, if one exists at all. After a GTM hire lands, reference their arrival and the implied mandate to build or rebuild the motion with the new capital. Filter round type, priced vs. bridge, before the signal reaches scoring, the same way an ICP check runs before a job-change trigger does.
The close date gets treated as the trigger itself, when it's really the start of a lifecycle with a much better moment further down it: the GTM hire. Teams also skip the priced-round-vs-bridge check and send growth-budget messaging to a company that just bought itself more runway, which reads as a data feed with no judgment behind it.
