PQL vs MQL vs SQL

Also called: mql pql sql · pql mql sql

MQL, PQL, and SQL grade a lead on three different kinds of evidence, content engagement, product usage, and direct sales conversation, and most leads pass through all three in that order before anyone counts them as pipeline.

Three acronyms, three different departments watching three different signals. The confusion isn't the concept. It's that most teams only track one of the three and call it lead qualification.

Custify lays the progression out cleanly: MQL first, from content signals like downloaded assets, webinar attendance, and pricing-page form fills, owned by marketing. PQL next, from actual product usage once someone is in a free trial or freemium tier, owned by growth or customer success. SQL last, from direct sales signals like a requested demo, a disclosed budget, or a quote request, owned by sales. The general path runs MQL to PQL to SQL, each stage adding a harder kind of proof than the last.

Why the order matters

Skip PQL and a sales team ends up working MQLs that never touched the product, which is slower and less predictable than working PQLs that already proved the product delivers value for them. That's the case for building a PQL layer at all: it sits between marketing's soft signal and sales' expensive one, and it's usually the cheapest signal to automate because the product already generates the data.

In practice

Teams without a product-led motion sometimes force a PQL stage in anyway, using activity that isn't really product usage, like an email open, as a stand-in. That produces a stage that looks like a PQL but carries none of its predictive value. Without a free trial or freemium tier, there's often no real PQL signal to build.

What people get wrong

People assume the three stages are interchangeable synonyms for interested lead. They grade different kinds of evidence entirely, and a lead can be a strong MQL and a weak PQL at the same time, downloading everything in sight while never opening the product.
