Seed list

A seed list is a set of test inboxes spread across major mailbox providers, used to send a message and check where it actually lands, inbox, spam, or promotions, before trusting a new domain or sequence with real prospects.

A seed list is the mechanism behind a placement test: instead of guessing whether a domain is ready, a sender emails a controlled set of inboxes spread across Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, and whatever else matters for the list, then checks each one to see exactly where the message landed. It's the closest thing cold outbound has to a repeatable go or no-go gate before real prospects see anything.

Why one inbox isn't enough

Mailbox providers don't filter identically, so a seed list has to span more than one of them to mean anything. A message landing clean in Gmail while getting routed to spam in Outlook is a normal result, not a contradiction, since the two are running separate models on the same authentication signals. Tools like GlockApps exist specifically to run this check across providers at once and report back placement per provider instead of one blended average that hides where the actual problem is.

Corporate mail sitting behind a gateway like Proofpoint is the hardest case to seed-test, since there's no aggregate placement dashboard to check the way there is with a consumer mailbox provider. For that slice of a list, reply and open behavior from those specific domains ends up being the closest thing to a real signal.

In practice

Run the seed test as a repeatable gate, not a one-time check before the first campaign. Rerun it for every new sending domain and every new client launch, since a domain that placed clean last quarter says nothing about a domain spun up yesterday.

What people get wrong

People run a seed test once, at setup, and treat a clean result as a permanent clearance. Placement isn't fixed. It changes as reputation shifts, so a domain that passed a seed test two months ago can be landing in spam right now without anyone having rerun the check.
