Dark funnel is the buyer research that happens where nobody can track it: review-site visits, private community threads, peer conversations, and anonymous browsing, all of it finished before a prospect ever fills out a form.
Dark funnel is the research a buyer does before they ever show up as a trackable lead: reading reviews on a site like G2, asking a peer in a private Slack community, browsing a site anonymously, talking to a colleague who already uses the product. None of it fires a form-fill event, and most of it never touches a system a GTM team can query.
A handful of tools chip away at the edges of it without fully solving it. Visitor-resolution tools identify some of the anonymous traffic hitting a website and match it to a company, sometimes a person. Review-site visits, G2, Capterra, and similar, are trackable in the sense that a referral shows up in analytics, even though the read itself happened somewhere a GTM team can't see. Both give a partial signal that research is happening. Neither gives the full picture of what was actually read, said, or decided.
The gap matters because a lot of the actual decision-making, what a buyer's peers said about a vendor, what came up in a private community thread, never leaves a trace a company can act on directly. What a team gets instead are proxies: an anonymous visit resolved to a company, a review-site referral, a spike in branded search. Useful, but partial.
A resolved anonymous visit or a review-site click is a passive research signal, not a commitment. It costs the visitor almost nothing to generate, which is exactly why treating it the same as a demo request or a pricing-page revisit overstates how far along that account actually is.
Treat a resolved anonymous visit or a review-site referral as a weak, low-commitment signal that needs corroboration, another visit, a second person at the account, an inbound reply, before it earns real outreach. Acting on a single dark-funnel proxy as if it were a demo request usually means reaching out to someone who hasn't actually decided anything yet.
Buying a visitor-resolution tool gets treated as solving the dark funnel problem outright. It doesn't. It surfaces one slice, anonymous website traffic, and leaves peer conversations, private communities, and word of mouth exactly as invisible as before. The tool narrows the dark funnel. It doesn't turn the lights on.
