Ideal customer profile

An ideal customer profile (ICP) is the set of firmographic traits, industry, size, geography, tech stack, that mark an account as a strong fit for a product, separate from whether that account is ready to buy right now.

Ideal customer profile describes the traits that make an account worth pursuing at all: industry, company size, geography, tech stack, sometimes a specific org structure or growth stage. It answers a fit question. It doesn't answer a timing question, and treating the two as the same thing is where most account-selection work goes wrong.

Fit gets you a list, not a reason to reach out

The classic ABM playbook starts and often stops at ICP fit: right industry, right size, right geo. That produces a list of companies that match on paper and tells a team nothing about whether any of them will buy this quarter. Signal-first account selection keeps ICP as the floor, then ranks inside it by what's actually happening right now: a hire, a funding round, a tech-stack switch. Fit decides who's eligible. Signal decides who's ready.

ICP also does real work as a filter, not just a target list. Checking fit before a signal gets scored keeps a team from spending enrichment credits proving that an out-of-ICP account has an in-ICP-looking trigger. Run the ICP check first, on cost grounds alone, and the signal layer only ever evaluates accounts worth the spend in the first place.

In practice

Most teams define ICP once, in a slide, and never revisit it as a live filter. The stronger version treats ICP as a gate that runs before every enrichment or signal-detection pass, not a one-time list-building exercise, so spend only goes toward accounts that already clear the fit bar.

What people get wrong

The common mistake is treating ICP match as a reason to reach out by itself. A list of accounts that fit on paper isn't a list of accounts ready to buy, and a message built only on fit reads like a firmographic filter with no judgment behind it. The second mistake is treating ICP as fixed once written, instead of a filter re-applied at every stage from list-building through scoring.
