Lead generation

Lead generation is the work of identifying and capturing people or accounts that show interest in a product, whether through a website form fill, a signal-based outbound target, or a cold-outreach reply, before any qualification happens.

Lead generation covers both directions of a go-to-market motion. Inbound lead gen is content, ads, and organic search that bring prospects to raise a hand: a demo request, a newsletter signup, a gated download. Outbound lead gen is sourcing target accounts and reaching them directly through cold email, cold calling, or LinkedIn, without waiting for them to show up first.

Volume without a system just moves the bottleneck

Lead generation only fills the top. It says nothing about fit or intent, that's what qualification does downstream. A team can run lead gen well and still starve its pipeline if nothing after the point of capture is built to keep up. What Is GTM Engineering, LLP's own definitional piece, frames this as a systems problem: a founder manually checking LinkedIn for lookalike accounts every Monday is doing lead generation, and the same founder swapping that manual check for an automated enrichment rule is still doing lead generation, just at a different ceiling. The piece's own readiness check asks how fast a new inbound lead gets a first touch, under an hour scores best, next day or later scores worst, because a lead sitting untouched is functionally the same as a lead that was never generated.

In practice

A spike in raw lead volume that doesn't survive qualification doesn't add revenue, it just relocates the bottleneck from the top of the funnel to wherever qualification happens next. Teams that measure lead-gen success by volume alone, without watching how much of that volume survives to become a real opportunity, tend to keep pouring effort into the wrong end of the process.

What people get wrong

More leads gets treated as an unambiguous win. It isn't, on its own. A lead-gen channel that produces twice the volume at half the fit rate can leave a team with less usable pipeline than a smaller, better-targeted channel, and the raw lead count alone won't show which is which.
