Pipeline velocity is a formula measuring how fast revenue moves through a sales pipeline: the number of open opportunities, multiplied by average deal value and win rate, divided by average sales cycle length.
The formula collapses four separate numbers, opportunity count, average deal value, win rate, and sales cycle length, into one figure that's meant to show whether a pipeline is getting healthier or worse over time, without eyeballing four charts separately.
Velocity rises when any one of four things improves: more qualified opportunities enter the pipeline, average deal size grows, win rate improves through better qualification, or the sales cycle shortens because approval bottlenecks get removed. It falls when any of those move the other way, even if the others look fine. A team can be closing bigger deals and still see velocity drop if the sales cycle stretched out enough to offset the gain.
The formula is a diagnostic, not a target. A single velocity number tells a team the trend is up or down, but not which of the four inputs moved. Getting to an answer worth acting on means pulling the four numbers apart again once the blended figure signals a problem, the same way a doctor uses one vital sign to decide which test to run next, not as the diagnosis itself.
Teams track velocity as one trend line quarter over quarter instead of watching opportunity count, deal size, win rate, and cycle length as four unrelated charts. A flat total pipeline value with rising velocity usually means the team is closing what's already there faster, which is a different story than selling more.
Velocity gets read as a pure growth signal, but it can rise for reasons that don't reflect a healthier pipeline. Discounting to close deals faster raises velocity by shrinking the cycle-length denominator. Counting a deal at an inflated value before it's actually negotiated does the same by inflating the average-deal-value input. Both push the number up without making the underlying pipeline any stronger.
