Sales pipeline

A sales pipeline is the set of open sales opportunities a team is actively working, organized by stage and weighted by how likely each deal is to close, used to project revenue and flag deals at risk before they stall.

Where a sales funnel tracks volume narrowing from broad awareness to a decision, a pipeline tracks specific, named deals: this account, at this stage, worth this much, expected to close on this date. It's a sales-side view built around live opportunities, not raw traffic.

Why a full pipeline can still be a bad pipeline

Most pipeline reviews lean on shallow proxies for health: total dollar value, deal count, or how many contacts are logged against each opportunity. A five-contact deal reads as safe. But logged contacts and real engagement are not the same fact. A VP who got cc'd on an intro email and never spoke on a call counts as a logged contact. So does a champion's direct report who sat silently through a demo. Both inflate the count without adding a real relationship.

The more reliable test is who actually showed up to which meeting. Pulling the attendee list for a deal's discovery call, its technical or demo call, and its pricing call, and checking whether the same one or two names sit in every room, tells a manager more about whether a pipeline deal will survive a stalled relationship than the contact count ever will. A pipeline full of deals where one person shows up to every meeting type is a pipeline that looks bigger on a dashboard than it actually is.

In practice

Pipeline reviews that only tally deal count and total dollar value miss deals where the underlying relationships are thin. A rep can show a full pipeline that's mostly single-threaded, one contact carrying every conversation from discovery through pricing, and the dashboard will still show a healthy number until that one relationship goes quiet.

What people get wrong

Pipeline value gets treated as a revenue forecast on its own. It isn't. A $2M pipeline built from deals with verified, multithreaded engagement is a different number than a $2M pipeline built from deals riding on one contact each, even though both report the same total.
