Lookalike accounts are companies that share firmographic or technographic traits with a business's best existing customers, sourced by pattern-matching against those customers instead of starting from a static ICP definition alone.
An ICP is defined top-down: a team decides in advance which industries, sizes, and geographies count as a fit. A lookalike list works the other direction. It starts from the accounts that already converted, or converted well, and looks for other companies that resemble them on the traits that actually mattered: similar headcount, similar tech stack, similar hiring pattern, sometimes the same investor or the same customer base. The list is derived from evidence instead of a guess written on a slide.
Plenty of teams run this by hand well before anyone calls it a system: a founder checking LinkedIn for companies that look like the business's best customers, on a set cadence, then handing a short list to a rep. That's still lookalike sourcing. It just isn't automated yet. Swapping the manual check for an enrichment rule that runs the same comparison against a firmographic and technographic database doesn't change what's being asked. It changes how often the question gets asked and how many accounts it covers.
A lookalike match is still just a fit signal, not a timing signal. A company that resembles a business's best customer on paper can be nowhere near a buying decision right now, which is why a lookalike list gets filtered through the same checks, hiring, funding, a stack change, that any other account-selection method needs before it's worth a send.
Build the lookalike criteria from actual closed-won accounts, not from an idealized customer description, and treat the resulting list as a starting fit filter, not a ranked list ready for outreach. Rank inside it by whatever signal indicates timing.
A lookalike list gets treated as sales-ready the moment it's built, since it's derived from real customers and feels more credible than a cold list. It isn't ready. Fit and timing are still two separate questions, and a lookalike match only answers the first one.
