What Claude actually is.
Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant. It runs as a chat app on web, iOS, Android, and desktop, and the same underlying models power the API and Claude Code for scripted or agentic work. Inside the chat, it can search the web, generate and run code, create files, and hold context across separate conversations through memory. Projects group files and instructions so a recurring task doesn't start from zero each time.
Pro and above give a choice of several Claude models. Picking the right one for a task is part of the setup, not automatic. Claude Code and the API sit a layer underneath the everyday chat window, for anyone on the team who wants to script or automate what the chat interface does by hand.

Free covers real work (code generation, web search, file creation, MCP connectors) but usage caps show up fast on heavy days. Pro is $20/month billed monthly, or $17/month if paid annually up front ($200), and is where most individual buyers land since it unlocks Claude Code and unlimited projects. Heavy users get pushed to Max, which starts at $100/month for 5x usage and scales to 20x. Team pricing is per seat ($20-25/month standard, $100-125/month premium) rather than a flat company fee, so cost scales with headcount. API and heavier Claude Code usage bill separately at rates that vary by model and task, on top of any seat cost.

How much does Claude cost for a small team?
Pro runs $17/month per person on the annual plan ($200 billed up front) or $20/month billed monthly, and covers Claude Code, Cowork, Design, Science, and unlimited projects. Team plans instead charge per seat: Standard seats are $20/seat/month annual ($25 monthly) and add admin controls, SSO, and central billing on top of the same feature set.
What's the actual difference between Pro and Max?
Max starts at $100/month and comes in two options: 5x or 20x the usage allowance of Pro, plus higher output limits and priority access during high-traffic periods. The feature set is otherwise the same, so the upgrade decision is really about how much usage a heavy user burns through in a month, not new capabilities.
Is there a free way to try Claude before paying?
Yes. The Free plan includes chat across web, iOS, Android, and desktop, code generation, web search, memory, file creation, code execution, and remote MCP connector support, at no cost. Usage limits are lower than any paid tier, so it's a fit for testing and light use, not for a team running it daily.
Does a Claude subscription also cover API or Claude Code usage?
Claude Code ships as part of Pro, Max, and Team plans, but heavier API and agentic usage bills separately at rates that scale by model and task, on top of the seat price. Teams building automations on top of Claude should expect a usage line beyond the flat subscription fee, not a single all-in number.
What does Enterprise add over Team plans?
Enterprise (self-serve) starts around $20/seat with usage billed by model and task, and adds spend controls, SCIM, audit logs, a Compliance API, custom data retention, network access controls, IP allowlisting, and a HIPAA-ready option on top of everything in Team. Larger organizations move to a sales-assisted plan with a custom MSA and quote instead of self-serve billing.
