What Gemini actually is.
Gemini is Google's AI assistant, built to sit inside the tools a team already has open: Gmail, Docs, Drive, Sheets. Not a new tab to manage. If the company already runs on Google Workspace, there's no separate login or app to learn. The free tier gets you in the door, but real use pushes most teams into a paid layer fast, whether that's a personal Google AI plan or a Workspace add-on.
But 'Gemini' isn't one plan. A personal subscription, a Workspace bundle, and the developer API are three separate pricing doors with three different limits, and Google states most of those limits as multiples of the free tier rather than fixed numbers. It's also not built for agents or automations. That work runs through Google AI Studio or Vertex AI instead, separate products with their own token billing.

Entry cost depends on the door you walk through. As a personal add-on, Google AI Plus is $4.99/month and Pro is $19.99/month (Ultra starts at $99.99/month), each layering more storage and higher Gemini usage limits on top of the free tier. For a company already on Workspace, Gemini comes bundled into Business Standard at $14/user/month on an annual commitment ($16.80 month-to-month), which is the more likely path for a GTM team. What forces an upgrade is usage caps, since Google prices Plus, Pro, and Ultra by usage multiples rather than fixed quotas, and Enterprise-grade governance and security controls sit behind custom sales pricing rather than a listed tier.
