About

What Gemini actually is.

Gemini is Google's AI assistant, built to sit inside the tools a team already has open: Gmail, Docs, Drive, Sheets. Not a new tab to manage. If the company already runs on Google Workspace, there's no separate login or app to learn. The free tier gets you in the door, but real use pushes most teams into a paid layer fast, whether that's a personal Google AI plan or a Workspace add-on.

But 'Gemini' isn't one plan. A personal subscription, a Workspace bundle, and the developer API are three separate pricing doors with three different limits, and Google states most of those limits as multiples of the free tier rather than fixed numbers. It's also not built for agents or automations. That work runs through Google AI Studio or Vertex AI instead, separate products with their own token billing.

What it does

  • Built into Gmail, Docs, Drive, and Sheets instead of a separate app.
  • Personal plans add storage too, topping out at 5 TB on Pro.
  • The Pro tier adds Deep Research and access to the Pro model.
  • Workspace Business Standard bundles Gemini in at a flat per-seat price.
  • Enterprise tier adds agent governance and Microsoft 365 and Salesforce integrations.
  • NotebookLM ships with the Plus and Workspace Business tiers.

Entry cost depends on the door you walk through. As a personal add-on, Google AI Plus is $4.99/month and Pro is $19.99/month (Ultra starts at $99.99/month), each layering more storage and higher Gemini usage limits on top of the free tier. For a company already on Workspace, Gemini comes bundled into Business Standard at $14/user/month on an annual commitment ($16.80 month-to-month), which is the more likely path for a GTM team. What forces an upgrade is usage caps, since Google prices Plus, Pro, and Ultra by usage multiples rather than fixed quotas, and Enterprise-grade governance and security controls sit behind custom sales pricing rather than a listed tier.

The verdict

Choose it, or skip it.

Choose it if

  • Teams already paying for Google Workspace get Gemini inside Gmail, Docs, and Drive without adding a new login or tool.
  • GTM teams that want AI drafting and summarizing tied to real inbox and doc context, not a separate chat window.
  • Buyers who want a flat per-seat add-on cost bundled into an existing Workspace plan instead of a new line item.
  • Teams that want long-context research (Deep Research on the Pro tier) without paying for a dedicated research tool.

Skip it if

  • Teams outside Google Workspace get none of the Gmail/Docs/Drive integration that is the main reason to pick Gemini over a standalone chatbot.
  • Anyone building agents or automations needs Google AI Studio or Vertex AI, not the consumer Gemini app tier covered here.
  • Teams wanting predictable flat AI spend across every tool in the stack, since Workspace, Plus, Pro, and Ultra price differently.
Alternatives

If not Gemini, then what.

  • Claude logo
    Claude
Free tier; Pro from $20/mo, Max plans for heavier usage; API billed per token.

Pick Claude when the team needs stronger long-form writing or coding help and isn't tied to Google Workspace.

  • ChatGPT logo
    ChatGPT
Free tier; Plus from $20/mo; Business and Enterprise plans per seat.

Pick ChatGPT for the broadest plugin/GPT ecosystem and cross-platform use outside Google apps.

  • Perplexity logo
    Perplexity
Free tier; Pro from $20/mo; Sonar API billed on tokens plus a per-request search fee.

Pick Perplexity when the job is sourced, cited research rather than drafting inside Gmail or Docs.

FAQ

Asked in real client work.

How much does Gemini cost on its own, outside Workspace?

As a personal subscription, Google AI Plus runs $4.99/month with 400 GB storage and 2x the free usage limits. Google AI Pro is $19.99/month, adds the Pro model, Deep Research, and 5 TB storage. Google AI Ultra starts at $99.99/month for 5x Pro usage limits, with a $199.99/month option at 20x and cloud storage from 20 TB.

Does Google Workspace already include Gemini, or is it a separate add-on?

Workspace Business Standard bundles Gemini in for $14/user/month on an annual commitment ($16.80 billed monthly), covering the Gemini app, NotebookLM, and AI built into Gmail, Docs, Drive, and Sheets, plus 2 TB pooled storage per user. Enterprise plans with added governance and security controls are custom-priced through sales.

Can you build agents or automations on top of Gemini the way you can with an API?

Not through the Gemini app itself. It's a consumer-facing assistant built for people typing into Gmail, Docs, or a chat window. Programmatic access for building agents or automated workflows runs through Google AI Studio or Vertex AI, which are separate products with their own token-based billing.

What's the actual usage limit difference between the paid tiers?

Google states each tier in multiples relative to the free tier: Plus gives roughly 2x higher Gemini usage limits than free, Pro about 4x, and Ultra runs 5x Pro limits at $99.99/month or 20x at $199.99/month. None of the pages specify raw message or token counts, so the multiples are the only concrete figures available.
