What ChatGPT actually is.
ChatGPT is OpenAI's chat assistant, built on the GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.6 models. It handles chat, drafting, image generation, and web search in one conversation, and it runs in a browser, a desktop app, and on mobile. A built-in agent called Codex plans, writes, tests, and ships code. A separate Work mode connects to apps like Gmail and Slack and produces docs, slides, and spreadsheets instead of plain text replies. Voice mode lets you talk instead of type.
It isn't built for automation, though. Custom GPTs, connectors, and scheduled tasks stretch a bit further, but wiring ChatGPT into other software or running it as an unattended agent means going through OpenAI's separate API platform, not a ChatGPT seat. The same app also covers health and finance questions alongside the work tools, so it reads more like a general consumer product with work features bolted on than a purpose-built team tool.

Can I use ChatGPT to build or automate workflows for a team?
